多くの英単語は子音で終わる

日本人が英語を上手く聞き取れない原因には、色々あると思いますが、子音(consonant)について説明してみます。日本語の単語は、すべて母音(vowel)で終わります。つまり、カタカナ文字は、すべて母音で終わります。しかし、英語では、半数以上の単語が、子音で終わります。つまり、英単語の最後の音は、日本語ではあり得ない終わり方なので、カタカナの耳では聞こえないし、書けないはずです。 英語をカタカナで聞き取りしようと思うことが間違いの始まりです。無理やりカタカナで英単語にフリガナをつけても、英単語の終わりの音を正しく書いたことにはなりません。さらに、英語では子音の連続もあります。また、子音で終わる単語の後に、母音で始まる単語が来ると、日本語の耳には、子音と母音が合体して、一つのカタカナ文字に聞こえます、この場合、日本人には、英単語の区切りが判らなくなります。ですから、カタカナのフリガナを付けて英単語を読むことは、避ける方が賢明です。できるだけ、正しい発音の教材と発音記号で、子音と母音を分離して聞くように意識しながら、充分に慣れることが大切です。

母音の章の説明に利用した単語を終了文字で分類してみました。英単語にはどんな終了文字があるか特徴をつかめると思います。
