イントネーション (INTONATION)

イントネーションは、音の高さになります。 これにより、感情や態度、質問しているのか、 あなたに発言を求めているのかが判ります。 イントネーションは、コミュニケーション(意思の疎通)に欠かせません。

では、イントネーションと強勢(ストレス)の違いについて説明します。 強勢は単語のどこを強調する、文のどの単語を強調するということですが、 イントネーションは、文全体にわたる音の高低の変化を意味します。

英語には、下降(FALLING) と 上昇(RISING) の二通りのイントネーションがあります。

- 下降(FALLING) -
確かな事実を述べる肯定文と否定文(Certainty)で使います。
また、会話で自分の話を終えて、相手の番になるときに使います。

会話がまだ終わらず、続きをちょっと考えるときに使います。

上昇(RISING)イントネーションを使うときは、「Yes」と「No」の質問をするときです。 What, who, why, where, when, howで始まる情報を聞く質問では、 下降(FALLING)イントネーションです。

例文です。

How long does it take you to make a flute?(↓)
Can I see one of your flutes?(↑)
Is this your flute?(↑)
Can you play the flute?(↑)

発音のコツとして 下降の前にちょっとだけ上昇する、上昇の前にちょっとだけ下降する、 文を読み始めるときは、中間ピッチで始めるがあります。 さらに細かなテクニックもあります、ビデオをみてください。

同じ肯定文でも下降(FALLING)イントネーションか、上昇(RISING)イントネーションかで、 確かな内容か不確かな内容かが判ります。ビデオで確認してみてください。
