内容語は重要で強く発声(おきな声、長めに、高い音)されます。 内容語にたくさん音節があるときは、強勢の音節についてさらに強めにします。 そして、機能語は弱く発音します。

I love to see the shining moon on a cool, autumn night.

The caterpillar found itself being lifted into the wind.

意味のまとまり(thought groups)での強勢では、 大抵、その中の一つの単語だけが強調され、 その単語は内容語の最後になります。

I see the same world as you,/ but I am able to see past/ all that is saddening and horrifying.//

早口で話す場合の強勢について説明します。
ネイティブスピーカーの早口(fast speech)では、これまで説明した規則を無視する場合があります。 内容語の連続音の句があるとよく無視されます。 それぞれの内容語を強調する代わりに、 より自然にリズムよく聞こえるように別の強調をします。 英語は、強・弱・強=ダン・タ・ダンの3拍子のリズムです。 (そして、日本語は、四文字の語が多く、四拍子(ダン・タ・タ・タ)または二拍子(ダン・タ)でしょうか)

パターン1 : 内容語は、強勢

- 内容語 -
名詞(nouns), 動詞(verbs), 副詞(adverbs), 形容詞(adjectives), 数詞(numbers)
- 機能語 -
冠詞(articles), 短前置詞(short prepositions), 補助動詞(helping verbs), 代名詞(most pronouns)

Can we talk about hairstyles?

It'll be fun. I promise.

I've had long, straight hair for most of my life.

A simple hairstyle makes life easier.

I admit that I've had a few bad haircuts in the past.

パターン2 : 意味のまとまりでは、最も強調するのは一単語だけで、大抵は最後の内容語

How would you describe/ your present hairstyle?// Is it conservative?// Do you think that your hairstyle/ reflects your personality?//

This is embarrassing.// I admit the hairstyle was bad.// Around twelve or thirteen,/ I cut my hair short.// I don't know why.

13,14,15などの数字は、普通は前部を強調(thirteen)しますが、 意味のまとまりの最後の語で使うときは、 後部を強調(thirteen)します。

At this time,/ I think it was Princess Diana/ who influenced fashion.// Perhaps this was a sorry attempt/ to look like a princess.//

パターン3 : 内容語が連続するときは、より自然な流れのリズムになるように規則を変更

Do you have many photos of yourself as a child?//

I'll bet there are some/ you don't like to show to people.//

As a little girl,/ I often wore pigtails.//

Around age eight or nine/ my hair looked rather wild.//

When Jennifer was fifteen,/ curly hair was in.//

パターン4 : ある単語を特に強調する必要があるときは、規則を変更
対比や誤解防止のためです。

Some people take a short amount of time to style their hair.// Others take a long time.//

As a young girl,/ I experimented with hirstyles.//
Now that I'm older,/ I'm more conservative.//
