[ð] 有声歯摩擦音(eth)

声帯を振動させながら、口を少しだけ開けて、上下前歯の間にできた隙間に舌先を軽く差し入れて挟ん形で、口蓋帆(こうがいはん:口の中の天井の喉奥の方)を持ち上げて、息を鼻腔には流さずに、吐く息を前歯と舌の隙間に勢い良く通して、空気を摩擦させて生じる音と声帯の声を合わせた音。息が続く限り音を出し続けることもできます。

[ð]は、日本語のザ行の子音「ズ」とはまったく異なります。 [ð]は、口を半開きにして舌を軽く出して歯で軽く挟み、そのまま息と声を出しながらズーズー言わせた音です。 [ð]の発音の後に子音が続くときは、[ð]に母音をつけないようにしましょう。

[ð]と発音する"th"で始まり"子音文字"が続く単語は見つかりませんでした。

although, otherwise,

[ð]と発音する"th"で終わる単語は、"with", "smooth"ぐらいです。

with, smooth,

"th"の発音が[θ]と[ð]のどちらになるかという簡単な規則は見つかりません。頻度傾向は、[ð]の場合は少く、[θ]の場合が多いです。 [ð]になる場合は少数の重要単語がほとんどですから、その暗記はさほど難しくありません。これまでに判明している規則性は以下です。

"-ith"は、[-θ]ですが、例外は"with"です。

[-ɪθ], Judith, Smith, faith,

[-ɪð], with withdraw, within, without, ([ɪð]となる例外),

"-ooth"は、[-θ]ですが、例外は"smooth"です。

[-uθ], booth, tooth,

[-uð], smooth([uð]となる例外),

"cloth"とその派生単語も例外です。

cloth [clɔθ], cloths [clɔðz, clɔθs], clothe [cloʊð], clothes [cloʊz, cloʊðz], clothing [cloʊðɪŋ],

"-th"[-θ]で終わる加算名詞の複数形は、"-ths"[-ðz, (-θs)]になります。例外は"month", "myth", "fourth, fifth, sixth...(分数の分母)"です。発音が難しいので練習してください。

"-thy"は、[θi]です。ただし、例外は、"worth"の派生単語です。

"-the"は、[ð]となり、最後の"e"は発音しません。例外は、"loathe"です。

"-ther"は、ほとんどが[ðɚ]となります。例外は、"panther"です。
